One of the most irritating thing I find in vw is while panning, part of the screen that you want to pan to, remains white until the mouse is released.

Imagine you're zoomed in to a part of a drawing. Then you pan from the bottom left to the top right. Now, virtually the whole drawing isn't visible until you release the mouse. This way I don't know whether I going in the correct direction.

Looking at the video on the architosh web site, it looks like 2011 hasn't fixed this problem. The top of the tower appears after the mouse is released. Other software don't behave this way.

When will this be fixed?

Almost all of the issues I have with VW revolve around having to work with AC users which is just about every project. It's going to be a tough decision to make. I feel like I just got my workflow in VW to happy place too. I'll wait to see what people think of the Mac version first but the draw to switch is great.

Theoretically yes but, at least in VW 2008, there appears to be a bug such that the line style can't be changed simultaneously for multiple windows.

You can select all of your windows using Tools > Custom Selection.

Then, in the Object Info Palette, click on "Settings" and see if you can change them all at once. In VW 2008, it seems to only change the first window selected...]]>

There is a tape measure tool, there is an advanced tape measure tool plug-in (Vectorbits I think), you can set a grid and secondary grid which can be snapped to in the preferences. Otherwise just create your own guidelines that lie in their own layer or class that subsequently can be turned off.......
....there is a trim tool (as opposed to erase tool) which can be used to trim/cut/erase bits or whole lines/objects in different ways......]]>

Please delete your user preferences:
* quit Vectorworks
* open the folder containing your user preferences, in your case it should be named "Vectorworks/12/Settings". I don't recall the path for XP, I am at the Mac right now.
* delete the file "SavedSettingsUser.xml"
* restart Vectorworks
Now look if this fixed.

The U key is default for mode changes in tools with modes. G key sets a cursor Datum point. These actions would need to be reassigned to different keys before your new hotkey definition can be saved.

So, cmdU and cmdG don't work for you for group and ungroup? Or you are just trying to get them down to a single key? Just curious.

The cursor in Vectorworks will change depending on the active tool you have selected. Other than the full-screen cursor preference, these are all set within the program and cannot be changed by the user.

For example, when you change to a drawing function, the cursor changes to a small cross. For most standard picking operations, the cursor is an arrow.

You can make changes to some of the interactive cursor settings, such as how visible and in what color you would like to see your snap and pick boxes, etc. Look at the "Interactive" tab on the Vectorworks Preferences dialog.]]>

I have a file: "WG_Model" that contains a very simple model of a one story building.

In WG_Section we created a section viewport. In this viewport something showed up...just not what we were expecting. Most of the building shows up, except for walls that extend into the attic space and the rafters. Also the "Section Style" class was not created automatically as it usually is.

You might be right actually Peter. When i first got this mac, even though the screen was far crisper than my previous 20", the menus and especially all the tools in VW, many of which were new to me as I updated from 11.5 at the same time, where impossible to decipher, far to small for my old eyes. But just now I've been playing with the resolutions and yes I have to agree, everything is crisper on full res. Even the smudges I've got forming in the top right of the screen ... I'll qualify my first post.
Although OSX isn't resolution independent yet but if the UI elements/text are too small for your old eyes, try changing your res settings, it won't be as crisp, however you may be able to read them without leaning forward ... I don't think the work space actually changes, you see what you see ...]]>

As I thought - can't do it with the new stair tool.

I did model it with the old (custom) stair tool but it leaves a bit to be desired. The object, itself, is slow (takes time to regen when you move it,) the handrail is buggy, and the PIO seems to crash VW from time to time.

We really DO need a single, comprehensive stair tool that is quick and stable. I'm beginning to worry that we won't ever get one, though. Requests for a improvements to the stair tool date back to when Moses was a kid. I've been using VW since VW2008 and am now using VW2010. The stair (now custom stair) tool has only changed in minor ways in the last three versions of VW. It's still just as buggy and broken as it was in 2008 (and I suspect before that.)

I was encouraged when I heard that VW2010 would have a new stair tool. I was hoping for quite a bit more than we actually got. Instead of fixing the existing stair tool (which has several useful features - including the ability to link to layers and ]]>

Looks like you solved it or at least worked around it. I meant that object extents could be out of the view. For instance, an arc could show in the view you want, but it has a really big radius, the center might be waaay off screen, so that the calculation of the center for all objects is quite different from the page or view center.

Some dwg imports have text boxes about a mile long containing only a few words. These screw up the combined object center.

I see the occasional drawings which prevent panning. I think they contain some corrupt object. Are you seeing the problem in all drawings?

I'm currently using the Bamboo as well. My biggest problem is that there doesn't seem to be anyway to turn of the "momentum" when 2-finger zooming/scrolling. While this is a great feature on the iPhone its a bit aggravating when trying to zoom in just that little bit.

It would be great if VW could incorporate the "pinch to zoom" feature. This would also free up two finger swiping for panning, where momentum wouldn't be such an issue. This would also help with consistency across apps. Can't tell you the number of times I've tried to 2-finger zoom in Excel...

Three finger saved view switching, or layer changing would be nice. As would two-finger Rotate plan...

When his drawings come in, I notice that there are many items right on top of each other. I also notice his spline lines come in very vertice heavy. (hundreds or even thousands)

I have my preferences set to bezier lines and high smoothing to keep count down.

He called today and said MY objects were at first low vertices, but if he changed views, they went to high vertice counts.

Is it something in his settings for spline lines that causes the vertice counts to go up? Something in file transfer settings (we use a Files to Go site)

Has anyone made a workspace that has all tools and all commands available?

I'm a little sick of finding out that although I am working in one mode there are tools that would help in another, for example I work most commonly in the Spotlight workspace which means the site planning tools I love are hidden. I have moved a majority across into my custom workspace but in doing so I am sure I've missed several bits an pieces along with Icons and Tooltips.

Anyone have a mega layout?

Cheers,
Should I draw the limit line vertically from locus upward, or horizontally at the upper end?
Which locus do you mean? I drew the 2d line in Front View, made the helix, and then switched to top view and created a cylinder as an extruded circle inside the helix.
Is there a way to rotate one end of a cylinder independently from the other end? I'm sure I've seen that done somewhere. I tried the Reshape tool, but no luck.
You can loft a couple NURBS circles on parallel planes, but it looks like a cylinder, even if the circles have relative rotation. You would see the rotation if the starting shapes have some irregularities, or if the planes are not parallel. Is that what you mean?

If the object you want to scale has "vertices", then you could create an Associative Dimension. Then when you change that dimension, the associated object should change also.

Unfortunately, most scans do not have any "vertices" to associate the dimension to.

This is worth checking out:

Zbrush is a very good 3D computer modeller, and there are many others, but you would need to find someone who is already competent in order to make this a simpler task. I recently worked on a project where the sculptor worked in this program and I was able to take the model and build the the required structure entirely from his model. (it was an extremely organic shape)

I have been involved in projects where objects/characters have been sculpted in clay and then 3D scanned by a portable scanner. The most useful files formats are usually IGES but 3D scans can export to many different formats.

I see your based in Canada, maybe look to the film industry for the sculpting expertise.]]>

Here's what I know. If you submit a bug via this board you may or may not get any response or communication from the engineers at NNA. But rest assured that as long as you follow the proper procedure (which includes sending a test file which demonstrates a reproducible problem, along with a written description of how to reproduce it) your bug will be taken seriously. It is always in the company's best interest to fix as many bugs as they can prior to, and after, release (as SP's).

So if you find 'em, send 'em in! ]]>

I was posting in the Wish List section hoping for a feature in 2011 which is very similar (it seems) to the drawing coordination interface that was released with Designer 2010, and so now I'm thinking that if I upgrade from 2008 to 2011 (when it comes out) I may also go from Architect to Designer to get that feature, but I don't want to spend $500 if it doesn't do what I want.

Has anyone out there used this tool? Can you link any reference marker to any viewport, or do you have to use a 3d model with section viewports (like the video shows)in order to set up the linked reference markers. Basically, I want to call out all drawing references in the Viewport Annotations, and link them to the appropriate Viewports so that if I move things around, rename sheets, etc. everything automatically coordinates. Can this feature do that?]]>

NNA should think about hiring the guy that created AccuTrans 3D (http://www.micromouse.ca/index.html).

For a $20 program it has faster and smoother navigation than vw. Download the demo and you'll see that the changes from wireframe to shaded views are INSTANT and it navigates around while rendered in ANY type eg. hidden line. I imported a 490MB dxf and navigation was effortless irrespective of what shaded view I chose.

Please NNA, do something about the speed of vw. If a $20 program can do it, surely NNA can do it?]]>

I have a building with various units which are categorised into types, thus each different unit type has many recurrences. However, with in each unit symbol there are door symbols which are linked to a text record. The door will be the same in each but the individual number of that door in the different recurrences of the unit symbol needs to be different. How is it possible to give these doors unique numbers without exploding the unit symbols in which they occur?
