Re: Importing symbols - texture error message

 Posted by Taproot:
Whenever I place a symbol i.e. from the furniture library, if a new symbol has the same texture as one already in the drawing I get an error message asking me to replace the texture / rename the new texture / or not to import the texture.

As a series of symbols can have 3 or more textures each, this can get tiresome.

Is there a way to set default behavior so that redundant textures are ignored ...i.e. "Do not import this texture?"

Thanks,

I have recently installed an 8g ram upgrade from OWC. Everything is working with the RAM, but when i use Renderworks, either Fast or Final, it takes much longer.
However the rendering looks better, but takes longer to get there.

Is there a setting that has possibly changed with the RAM upgrade, different allocation possibly?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is it just me or is anyone else getting fed up with crashes / slow performance of Vectorworks?

I also get 1 or 2 crashes a day.

 Good day All

I seem to experience a similar problom with PDF's being to big.
I only have Adobe Reader 9 and the Quick PDF Tools with PDF Complete.
When Print to PDF, it saves the PDF with some "Not Allowed" functions which makes it not possible to merge in Quick PDF Tools.
Can't seem to find where to edit that all is Allowed.
I need to be able to combine multiple PDF files into one and not be to big to send via email.

Any work around for decreasing File size when not having Adobe Acrobat Pro and still keeping a reasonoble DPI of say 250-300?
Have not tried Exporting to see the differencee in File size, but from above posts it seems to be bigger.

Thanks for any responces

FillPat(1); {0 value = no fill; 1 = back color; 2 = front color}

FillBack(65535,65535,65535); {The back color = white}

I have a project with several sheets, each with its own set of Keynotes. Somehow the Keynotes for A1 are showing up on A3, and I can't get rid of them. When I Edit Keynotes in the Info Box, the A1 notes don't appear (only the A3 notes do), and when I convert every Callout in A3 to being NOT a Keynote, all of the A3 Keynotes disappear from the list, but the A1 notes persist.

I've checked, and there are no hidden copies of A1 Viewports on Sheet A3. If I delete the Keynote Legend and then reconvert all the A3 Callouts into Keynotes, the A1 Keynotes reappear (also, their numbers don't correspond to anything on A3 - Callout #1 is a note about a roof, but #1 on the Legend is about some columns on A1; the roof note shows up as #41 or something).

I need to get this drawing to a contractor, but it's nonsense right now. Please help!

I don't think you can get symbol scaling directly in a worksheet.

It is available in Vectorscript, so you could use a script to write the data to a record attached to the symbol and then bring that into the worksheet.

But then you would have to remember to run the script every time you need to update the info in the worksheet.

Hey thanks Michael for your help and interest

Correct is

=((A7*0.05)^0.42)*640

When using mms

Had a bit of a lesson yesterday in to the power of, fractions, square roots etc and was the told later the above is the way to go

Although the training vids for the ETT clearly show inputs in mm as per attached and we have moved from formulas like this for other things

=AREA_LEGACY(((C='Gardens-Mulched') | (C='Gardens-NoSoil')) & (LOC='loc13'))/1000000*0.075

To

=AREA(((((C='Gardens-Mulched') | (C='Gardens-NoSoil')) & (LOC='LOC2784'))))*0.075

– gets a bit confusing

So very obviously my bad

Thanks again mate

That's interesting that the tape measure tool does that. In a similar incident, I went through some hell trying to get a worksheet to to give me true lengths and widths of 3d rectangles I had rotated in space. I could get the worksheet to only report correct dimensions IF the object was aligned to parallel to the screen plane. The dims would change as you switched to different views.

So it seems that the tape measure is aware of true dims no matter what your orientation, which means the program is, but worksheets don't have this capability.

Howard's solution sounds like the best one, as exporting as a DWG will - as he already said - allow you to maintain control over line weights etc; however, another option (for Mac users) is to view the locked PDF which you exported with Preview, and then select "File>Duplicate>Save as...", and save the copy without any security.

The benefit of this method is that you quickly save it as a PDF which you can import into Photoshop without needing to go via Illustrator if you have no line weights to adjust.

Perhaps if you run the render, and then open the Mac Activity Monitor, you will be able to see how your machine is handling the process; you will be able to see how much of your CPU and memory it's using...

If it is running at close to 100% CPU, it will obviously seriously slow down your machine, but unless Activity Monitor reports the process as not responding, you may just have to be patient - and try not to put any further strain on your resources while it runs.

How are you changing the symbol?

I think you would have better luck Duplicating the symbol in the Resource Browser and then editing that symbol definition as Vincent suggests.

If when you are doing the editing you are doing anything other than changing parameters in the Object Info Palete of the Window PlugIn Object, you are going to have problems.

Alternately, you should be able to go in and edit your "Blue" symbol and change the Insertion Options and uncheck the box that says something like On Insert Convert to Group.

Groups are not capable of being inserted into walls. Symbols and PlugIn Objects are.

The Marvin windows are PIOs contained within a symbol so they can live in the Resource Browser. When you insert them they lose the container and become just PIOs.

If you change the objects inside the Symbol Definition to something other than a single PIO, then they can't convert back to a PIO and convert to a Group on insertion instead.

But I just tried it and even though it correctly lists the number of objects that are inside a symbol and that meet the selection parameters, when it's run it doesn't seem to select anything. I never have been able to get it to actually select things inside symbols. But maybe I'm misunderstanding it's use. Or not doing something I should be. Does anyone know how to get Custom Selection to select inside of Symbols, like it seems to suggest it can do?

In my workflow (I'm a lighting designer in the entertainment industry), when I do a revision, I want the latest Revision information to track to ALL title blocks in the project. As I understand it, the Revision Text currently is only attached to each instance of the Title Block / Sheet Border. Is this correct?

And call me a fool, but I don't understand what the difference between Revision and Issue is ... As far as VW is concerned, it seems like they are both specific to the instance, and cannot be universal to the whole project. How do others use Revision and Issue information in workflows?

What I really like about the Revision and Issue information is that I can choose how may Revs / Issues I want to show in the title block. As it stands now, I have 5 fields for the last 5 revisions, and I have to manually bump one off the list once I get

I've been critical of VW BIM myself.

However there are many things going for VW. I think as a communication tool the drawing output is best in class.

Colour, Layers, opacity give a photoshop like ability. The ability to cut and paste images into the drawing is excellent. A majority of my business is coming from a design build construction company- they use us because of e clarity of our drawings. We could not do what we do on revit.

You can't cut and paste into a revit file. You have to build everything as a family. The major complaint I hear of revit is that during develop design phase you get slammed with dialog boxes that disrupt the design work flow.

Still this thread is not a revit vs VW thread it is to see if users think that an upgrade is worth it.

When editing these in a document (at least in VW2011), ensure that you are either on a 1:1 scaled design layer, or a sheet layer at the time of edit. It is not advised that you edit the symbol(s) whilst on a scaled layer as you may get some unexpected results.

Sorry Mark, that was what you said earlier......I'm getting sloppy......

I guess my advice would be to get a new Mac.

With a new Mac you can run your VWs 2008 (if it runs on Lion) and your ACAD, regardless of what you prefer and the new Mac will also run a future upgrade of VWs when the economy picks up again. That way your investment will always be secure.
If the Mac version of ACAD is buggy you'll only feel more at home being a VWs user

 OH! OK
Will have to master this new tool

I still have a problom with the issues as mentioned by Kevin and the way the new tool is setup I think is wrong as now I need to group a singe extrude to edit it as all is done in the drawing.
The window worked well as it was seperate of the drawing and no obstruction by other things in the drawing.

Will try the convert thing too.

Thank you all

Maybe the dbl click to complete the object is missing?

Wall Tool with floating data:
Click to start the wall, key in the L value.
Press Rtn to lock the L value, drag (or key) to desired angle
Dbl click to complete the wall - pointer can be anywhere on the angle extension line. does not need to be on the wall endpoint.

Or
Draw or paste any sized/style wall object anywhere in the drawing, enable the selection tool (press x), drag wall to position and adjust OIP fields for Style, LWH and ° and Z, etc. Also helpful are Move command, Move by Points tool, Reshape tool, and many others.

I just made a panorama starting with a RW Camera view rendered in Fast RW.

View height seems higher than RW Camera Point of View.
Pivot point is somewhere behind the Camera location.
Start view in the "movie" points North (along Y axis). Camera points of ENE.

This from VWX Help:
. . . the current Vectorworks view (XYZ coordinates of the view origin or, in other words, the center of projection) becomes the pivot point for the QTVR panorama view, as if the view was rotated to be flat, and then oriented towards the positive Y axis.

I can't quite square that with camera location. Must be another way to predict or set the XYZ coordinates of the "center of Projection". But I don't often use this feature.

The youtube video shows everything nicely happening on your desk, but the iMac cam is not suitable, meaning I do not get the model on the table, does anyone have success? Also I my magic mouse is useless for zooming I tried old mighty but only slightly better.
So anyone else splurged the $300?

 Thanks, that helps.
However, I've attached the pdf as a referenced file meaning when I update the orignal .xls file it updates automatically in VectorWorks. This is working for me except I don't understand what circumstances VW uses to auto-update the file (when it opens?) nor do I know how to tell VW to update the referenced files, which I'd like to do directly after changing the xls file so I see how it looks on the VW page.

Any advice on that?
Cheers!

Bob, given that Vectorworks 2008 works on one computer and doesn't on another indicates that it is not a program wide problem. It has to be a problem specific to your computer and installation. Therefore try the following:
- Use Disk Utility to Verify and then Repair permissions.
- Reset Vectorworks Preferences.

If the problem persists try uninstalling and then reinstalling Vectorworks on your computer.

If that doesn't work try doing a clean install of OS 10.6.8 on your computer.

If you are still having problems after all of this get a Mac expert in.

Is there a quick and easy way to find out which objects or resources are bogging down a drawing? Right now, I just delete one class, save the file, and see what the resulting file size is.

My most recent project suddenly got very slow to navigate and render. I found one render texture that was 20mb of the file and another that was 10mb.

Also, 3d objects imported from Sketchup can be memory hogs. Converting to mesh helps. So does purging, after importing.

A marble texture included with renderworks is 1mb of my file. It may not sound like much but multiply that by many, many textures and it adds up.

No it does not, but I did manage to get it kinda working.
IF I am in an Isometric view it works, but then you will need to draw each line, edit it, go to TopPlan and then move the line in place as trying to draw a flat plan does not work.
