Yes, Shift select each one to get them all, then press return or click the green checkmark. This shell or an extrude of a selection containing several 2d polys will make a new single object with gaps. I think these are the only two choices for creating an object with gaps which can have a texture mapped overall. Convert to Generic Solid retains the mapping. Unfortunate that groups do not work for this!

Is the exchange not working or are you just getting the "Not All Instruments were updated by the import." message? How many instruments are in the LW file? How Many in the VW file? The import/export procedure does not allow LW to delete lights from VW so it may have extra lights.
The procedure updates lights across all layers so if you have lights on non visible layers you may see this message but not see the lights selected because they are not turned on.

thanks.. I will use this heaps... especially before doing a Replace Instruments..
which always catches me out when I have symbols selected on other layers but don't want to replace them..

Maybe because the symbols are on other invisible layers that you get no warning that you have more than one type selected..

 cvdub,

Check the symbol that is is use in your Label Legend. Select the symbol and choose fit to objects. You want to check to see that size of the selections looks correct and that there is nothing making the symbol look taller or wider than you expect.

As for moving the labels, do you see the blue handles over each label when the lighting device is selected? If the handles are not there you probably have Interactive Scaling disabled. To enable it activate the 2D selection tool and click the 2nd button in the mode bar.

Hi All, Went to Tech Support for an answer to this issue. Here's the reply:
"There does appear to be an issue with this instrument. It does not appear to be rotating correctly. I have narrowed the cause down to the Parts record attached to the mounts for this light. If I remove the record the device rotates correctly. I have attached a file with a modified version of this lighting device in which the Parts record has been removed. I am submitting this to our engineering department as well."
If anyone would like to have a copy of this modified Color Blaze 72, please e-mail me directly and I will forward it to you. Thanks for the replies!

I did some truss with socks by a texture with "glow." I imagine it would work the same on regular truss.

The drawback is that you don't have falloff in the light along the truss. The whole surface glows at the same intensity. The benefit is that it is very easy for the rendering engine.

I limit the objects to a class i.e Lights, Positions, Truss
Then set the worksheet to only look there. Several years ago I put up file in the resource share of this forum. It has a fixture count worksheet.

The attached file is a favorite where I keep my current ones and tweak them after importing to a particular project. You'll need to adapt the Layer & Class names to suit your work.

Re: Label Legend Lighting Instrument Layout Symbol Missing

 Posted by JBenghiat:
Usually the base symbol, "Symbol A," is part of the label legend. That way, when you import a label lagend, the model symbol will come along with it. The symbol also helps you position your labels in the legend and is used to calculate the relative positions of labels to either the insertion point or boundary of any symbol.

The name of the model symbol is actually contained in a (hidden?) record attached to the label lagend, so it is possible to delete the model from the legend, and the legend will still function correctly, as long as "Symbol A" is a resource in your document. So, this means:

- "Symbol A" must be a resource for the legends to work. In your case, import the symbol to your drawing, refresh labels, and you should be good.

- "Symbol A" should really be the same "Symbol A" you used when creating your label legends.

- To ease in importing legends and to prevent purges, it's a good idea for "Symbol A" to be placed in your label legends.

Odd behavior coming from the "MAC 2K PERFORMANCE "E" Floor" fixture...

In 3D, the beam doesn't come out of the front of the head, but sometimes it comes out the side.

The issue doesn't seem to be in most of the other fixtures I played with ...

Honestly, the whole Spotlight 3D symbol thing is a bit of a mystery to me, so I wasn't able to see what the issue was before VW2012 crashed too many times for me to lose interest.

I haven't tried any renderings yet, but so far, things look pretty good.

Thanks again for your efforts!!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think some of the 2D/3D interaction you describe is intended to take place as annotations. I don't mean annotations are necessarily the best solution to drawing 2D over 3D or that there aren't workarounds, but I think it explains why you can't find an easy way to do what you want.

I actually find Convert copy to polygons to be quite useful if you don't need your 2D view to constantly modify from 3D updates.

 Posted by James Russell:
Justin and Others,

In my experience thus far I've only found three types of H-Stands. The home made, the square and the round.

Square is usually a length of 25mm x 25mm RHS steel about 350mm long welded to two small legs of 25 x 25 also. Normally lamps are attached without a hookclamp.

The Round is normally a piece of 48mm OD Pipe around 350mm long again with 25 x 25 RHS legs.

We always have a symbol for these in our Theatre Templates. They are pretty easy to draw though. When you're happy with it make it a symbol, place one on your drawing and convert it to a Light Position Object. Naming conventions can be up to you, eg "FLOOR 01".

Lights can be attached as they would a normal LX position, you just need to ensure you've got Set 3d Orientation enabled at the bottom of your lighting device and rotate the unit 180° in the Y axis.

Attached is an image.

Hope that helps, ask more if you need.

Cheers,

J

 Jim,

Seems mostly doable ... You will likely have to create custom fixtures and play with them to get the "look" exactly right.

But (as far as I know) there is not a way to control the lights in your rendering from a lighting console. To do this, you would have to go to some sort of pre-visualization software, such as ESP Vision, Light Converse, Martin Show Designer, WYSIWYG, Capture, etc.

The only way to control the lighting in a Vectorworks Spotlight (aka VW SL) scene is through the VW SL interfaces.

Good luck!

Are these Lighting Instruments? If so, you can adjust the Beam Angle and the Field Angle in numbers of degrees. If the Field Angle is larger than the Beam Angle, you'll get a soft edge. If the values are the same, you'll get a hard, sharp edge.

If you are just using the Light tool from the Visualization palette, you can adjust the beam and spread angle on the Object Info palette.

Hope that helps!

The event seating looks for other objects placed by the event planning commands to use as a look to point. If none of those objects exists it places the look to point close to the center of the seating layout.
From there you can grab the control point and move it to where you need it. The simplest option is to snap it to the midpoint of what you want to be the front of the seating area.
It's impossible for the command to determine where the front of the seating is without finding some other object.

If you want to place the look to point when you are creating the seating area use the create seating layout command.

To expand a bit, the instrument insertion tool can be found in the Spotlight tool set palette, which is only visible in the Spotlight or Designer workspace. The tool will insert any symbol as an instrument.

The Spotlight workspace also has a menu item to convert a placed Smbol into a Spotlight Lighting Device.

Symbols which have been prepared for use with Spotlight (either by NNA, a third party, or a user) have a record attached called "light info". This tells Spotlight default information to use for type, wattage, weight, etc, as well as tells Spotlight ro automatically select the Instrument Insertion tool when you select the symbol in the Resource Browser. The VW help viewer contains a section on creating symbols optimized for Spotlight. You may want to start there and come back with specific questions.

As I mentioned before, though, you can still use a "regular" symbol as an instrument, you will just be missing some convenience features.

The top aligned with the bottoms of the middle chairs in the first and last row, and extended the full length of the house from back wall to the stage. I then made a 180 degree sweep. I tried to make the origin of the sweep the locus of the concentric seating radius, but I kept getting an error message that the locus was not on the same plane, and I couldn't figure out how to correct that. Anyway, I let the sweep be created in the default mode, which has the origin from the left-most point, and then did "Edit Sweep," which allowed me to place a new locus at the concentric seating radius. I then created 3D shapes on all sides of the sweep and did a Subtract Solids, which made the edges of the sweep to be the same as the auditorium walls.

 Hi Ericsrocks;

When you have a chance, update your profile to include your machine & vw version. [then you don't have to write it into your post every time].

the vw etc par body is your culprit; and more specifically, inside the body, is the 3D locus. edit the 3d component of the symbol; select the 3D locus, and change both the X and Y axis of the 3d component to 0". exit the symbol, refresh the drawing, and all of the source 4 bodies should correctly reorient themselves to their assigned focus points.

I think with generic truss your choices are

1. Make each section of truss a separate object
2. Use some kind of calculation of the length and the connection intervals.

Option 2 requires that you either class each different truss length and/or use correct connection intervals in the trusses.

It sounds like you have clicked on the end marker on the Attributes palette before drawing. Try drawing a Line. Does this have end markers too? Sounds like you need to make sure nothing is selected, turn off end markers on the Attributes palette and then any future objects will be fine. For those you have already drawn, just select them, and turn off the end marker in the same place.

Hope that helps

2) Symbols can be made up of other symbols. make up your bar of 6 pars, select all the objects that you want in the symbol. Modify>create symbol, and set as you want in the options that open up. You can then go in and edit in the resource browser, if it's not 100% correct or needs to be tweaked.

 Jimmy,

I'm a little unclear on both your questions.

By "14 different records" do you mean Light Info-1, Light Info-2, etc? Were you bringing in symbols created from an earlier version of VW? The light info record has evolved over the years, so one from a previous version will be seen as different from that in a current file, and you will get a replace/renane warning. The easiest way to deal with this is to import the current Light Info format into your original symbol file, replacing the old LIRec. Any data in matching fields will be preserved. Then bring the symbol into your new symbol library.

There is also a menu command: Tools>Records>Transfer field data, though you will need to do this one field at a time.

You probably want to make the class more specific than none. One of the great features of classes is that you can set attributes by class, thus ensuring that all your line weights and fills are consistant among instruments. You can call the class whatever yo

Re-importing the labels didn't help.

One thing I've noticed is that when I did delete the labels and then reimported them, the "active" fixture label had nothing check marked. I could then drop 2D fixtures into the plot and the label manager data was not shown. I could then tell it what label to use and everything was fine...sort of. When placing the fixture, there would be what looks like some extra field that wants to be attached to the fixture, like a placeholder. It almost looks like it's about the same size as when you go to add text to a drawing. 3D fixtures do not exhibit this anomaly.

I can post a picture if someone can tell me how to attach it to the post.

One other thing. I am new to Screen Plane and Layer Plane, but what I just noticed is that my 2D fixtures are set to Layer plane and my 3D fixtures don't have that option to change that since they are 3D. I noticed that if I was set to Screen plane and dropped the fixture in, I would get the l

 Hey All,

I encounter this issue all the time when drawing a 3D lighting
design for presentation or ESP. My method has been to duplicate
the lighting layer once the lights have all data. Patch paperwork& reports need to be generated first, before layer duplication otherwise the fixtures get doubled up.

With the duplicate layer now a 2D FOR PRINT layer I move things
around so all the LL can be read and no longer stacked in plan view
this basically adds work to the design process and this point is when I should start programming the show or getting on with the next job.

Traditional boom positions are easy enough to illustrate for a
theatre but when we get into pixel mapped light walls of multiple fixtures it all gets a bit hectic. What would be cool is a LL in
3D that always faced the camera view showing the fixture position and patch data in one hit.

regards

Dan

 Hi acdeslx;

historically i've found that nudging lighting devices always takes a lot longer than nudging the same thing when it's merely a hybrid symbol. nudging a plug-in object just always takes longer to process.

because of that, i quickly became a fan of the move tool. command-m [or alt-m on a pc, right?]. i'm sure there are other assists, and inevitably nudging will be involved, but using the invisible grid, and using some of Sam Jones' autoplot tools for spotlight both help to reduce the instinctive Need for Nudge.

Mike: i fiddled with the Colortran 3-cell and you're right. The 3D rotation is funky. In my rough examination, there are two problems: 1) the 3D locus in **each** of the three cyc parts needs to be zeroed on both the X and Y axes, and 2) the 3D component of the "Far Cyc 3 Cell" has an additional 3D locus. Once i removed this fourth 3D locus, and centered the other three, the Far Cyc 3 Cell behaved more correctly. until i change the 3D Y rotation. when i set that to 90 degrees, all three 3D components "sat on their elbows".

I'm still trying to figure this 3D stuff out, but i know these two changes will help. i know i spent weeks trying to suss out the selador striplights in the ETC Combo Pack.

Good luck,

It is so cool, yet I find myself needing desperately the "real" thing: When I aim a source at a reflective surface, I need the light to bounce off that surface and onto the next surface. It seems terribly counterintuitive that the render package would be strangled in this way.
And what I'm gathering from this thread is that there's currently no way to do that outside of an export to C4D? Which means, I'd need to pony up the 1800$ US etc? Big bummer. And WAY outside both my and the dot-orgs I work for to afford.

I'm open to suggestions on how to solve this problem. Elegance counts, but not as much as a realistic answer.

What I ended up doing was creating a 20ft cylinder, and rotating it 10° on the z-axis. I then used that to create a symbol, edited the 2D properties, and viola I have my new pipe at the angle I wanted. Converted it to a Lighting position and have lights hung off of it.

Assuming you are using vw2011 and the stock ganging tool....

You may have found a bug.

To fix it:

1. Make sure nothing is selected. Check that the OIP says "No Selection"

2. In the Attributes Palette make sure the arrows are turned off for both sides.

3. Tools > Utilities > Reset All Plug Ins. Accept the ominous warning.

If the drawing is really big and you don't want to risk having it go through every instrument and take a long time, you can just select the affected ganging objects and force them to reset by changing any parameter in the OIP and changing it back. (i.e., click Show Label twice).

The ganging tool seems to take on whatever the default marker setting is when it is inserted or reset. But the markers cannot be changed directly when the the object is selected.

is there a way to lock the ch and colour to the ends of the luminaries so when they rotate the ch stays near the base and the colour follows the nose? I realise I can make multiple label legends but if you could lock into the base of the lamp or the nose it would save so much time.

I am a student running on the student edition of Vectorworks 2011. I just installed the program the other day to finished up a project for class. But i found that when I opened the 2010 document into the 2011 program my curser would be over a light, but the program would select a random light elsewhere on the drawing. I have turned off all the snaps and hidden snaps but it is no use. I have used the touchpad to try and select lights with no success, along with two different wireless mice.

I am running off of OS X on a Macbook with an external display (I have disconnected this as well and ran off the computer's built in monitor with no success).

I am starting to wonder if it is a import glitch or if when i downloaded the program from Vectorportal something didn't catch.

It is only being stubborn about the lighting symbols, the architecture and the labels are easily selected without a hassel.

I thank any help i can get.

Keep your hybrid symbol as a hybrid. Just convert it to an instrument THEN set 3d orientation.

1) select your speaker
2) spotlight>object conversion> convert to instrument
3) in your object info palette, scroll down to the bottom and check "Set 3d Orientation"
4) play around with your X Rotation and Y rotation values

I stumbled across a very easy way of showing illuminated lenses.
Edit the default instrument texture of your fixture to have a backlit reflectivity.
Once you have done this, the lense lights up. This only works on moving yoke fixtures.
I don't know what Red Symbols are, can you explain?
Sure...

Insert a PIO and make any settings changes you'd like. Create a Symbol from that PIO, making sure "Convert to Plug-in Object" is toggled on in the "Creat Symbol" dialog. The Symbol that is created will be red in the Resource Broswer. When you insert that Symbol, all of the settings changes you made will carry through and the object will be returned to its PIO state. This can be quite helpful for things like memorizing text locations and 3D orientations for Lighting Devices or different stock Video Screen settings.

Make sense??

 Dave,

There are lots of ways to refine search criteria, but the correct combination depends on that exactly you are trying to count and how you composed your position. Are you counting individual segments or total lengths? Do you want a count of all hardware, corner blocks, etc, or is that something the shop determines for you.

Doing a quick test, if I make a position of 8 truss segments, create a report looking for the Straight Truss record, search in symbols and plug-in objects, I get an accurate count -- but this may not be what you are trying to do.

Feel free to post a file if that would help you explain.

Michaels idea of multiple classes inside a single symbol will only work if you only need to show one symbol at a time.

Symbols are designed so that every instance is the same.

What you really need is Plug-In Objects instead of symbols. That way you get the benefit of parts being the same, but each instance having parameters that can be changed.

How many objects are you talking about? How complicated are the objects? Is this a one-time thing, or is this something that will be used over and over? Do you only need the 3D or do they need to be hybrid objects that show differently in Plan view.

The answers to the above questions will help determine if it makes sense to try and make PIOs or not.
