Benson, Kevin, not wishing to detract from the importance of knowing where one stands with constant feedback from the App running, but as a Mac user a quick check in "Activity Monitor" usually gives much more reliable info on what's going on with the S L O W E R (take note NV) products in ones arsenal.

Any failings like "Not Responding" are immediately visible.

Yes it's a pain to have to rely on something other that the item of current interest, but it does supply a modicome of tranquility knowing that despite indication to the contrary, VW, RW or both, is still actually doing something.

:) Hope this is of some help

Still doesn't excuse the lack of accurate info offered, though.

 Posted by Chris D:
I think this again illustrates a point about BIM that I've said before...BIM is all or nothing:

In 2D, lines and arcs can draw anything you could ever want to build, but in the BIM workflow, if your door tool can only do a very limited range of doors, the workflow breaks down and you're in to workarounds - non-intelligent, non-parametric, non-reporting, different-scheduling dumb symbols made from primitives. That then isn't BIM.

So, despite it's miniCAD origins...CAD for the smart sized firm...etc etc...you can't do BIM on the cheap and Nemetschek should recognise that. If you're going to sell a BIM tool it has to do the job.

 And the Hatch Creation Tool needs a total rebuild – it should be:

- easier to create hatches – perhaps more graphical rather than rocket science
- able to use gradients as background fills for hatches
- able to use repeating or tiled images as backgrounds for hatches with a really decent library of images provided
- 2D and 3D representations of fills, hatches, renders whatever correlate
- possible to snap to lines or geometry in a hatch as an option
- the Attribute Mapping Tool at least for Hatches is a tad clunky – useable but clunky
- able hatch in 3D properly

Wonder how long; how many of versions of VW the current hatch tool has been hanging around for?

I'm basically locked into VW because of the industry I'm in (entertainment), but I'd certainly explore other options if I were able to.

I hope the CAD industry in general gets a little more of the spark from faster, cheaper, nicely designed, user-friendly software vibe going around other spheres of production software.

 From a recent escapade, I would wish for:
- Something in the Properties, OIP or whatever to allow you to start the grid from a particular location, a la the framing tool;
- Something in the help/manual to correctly say how to adjust the grid (yes it is simple ONCE you know), but it should also note to select the correct MODE;
- Something in the knowledge base, even a 30 second YouTube video, for the same reason;
- the ability to move or delete an individual grid line;
- The ability to have lighting symbols snap to or even insert into and move with the grid. Imagine being a cad jockey on a large office project where your grid moves a bit. It would be nice to have it move together (BIM, anyone?);
- for that matter have the smart edge tools act on the lines between grids, and even the center of a grid rectangle, not just the object itself;so you could accurately drop in lighting or other objects(yes you can snap to an intersection if your symbol is made that way or if the fixture is

Another one we totally agree on Bruce! :confused:

i have never reached a satisfactory solution to anything i ask the "Help" in VW.
You'd think that the fact that Nemets have bothered to make use of something like Air to run the Help they'd at least have taken the trouble to see if a Search got an expected result.

Having said that, it doesn't give much of a result with Photoshop either. So maybe it's Air that is the "spanner in the works". :)

We should be able to have the existing and the new dtm at the same time in the drawing. The stair tool can display 2 pieces on two different layers, so the dtm should also display the two on two different layers.

Now we need to recalculate the dtm for each to have our viewports updated accordingly and we can't use the two situations at the same time.

2)

The dtm should be a solid, so that section viewports doesn't need to depend on the current attribute settings and for other stuff. We then can also take the dtm, transform it into a solid and do stuff with it.

3)

We need to add and subtract solids from the dtm. The way we build, we never can get the dtm like it will be in real life. I'll attach an example in section of what I mean.

4)

Dtm modifiers should be able to overlap each other. It's too much work and frustrating to 'almost' touch each other and see that it doesn't work the way you want.

The second wish may be tricky to grant: It is often quite difficult to get the horizon of an image environment right. It is either too low or too high. If one can drag and drop a texture/symbol, then why can one not drag and drop a record onto an object. Similarly why can one not drag an object into a worksheet and have it count/ display information?

At least this way the odbc would be tied into software that Nem controls rather than letting Excel have all the glory (hardship).

 Font mapping is a necessary compromise when importing files with fonts which are missing on the system.

Once mapped, the fonts will continue to preserve this mapping and there is no way I know of to review & edit what mappings are active for a particular document.

So - If I make an undesirable mapping choice which I cannot recall the only way to undo it is to delete the entire mapping set and re-import.

That's why I've taken to making a screen-shot each time FM is invoked - but a document-centric mapping subset would eliminate this workaround.

Or is there a better way?

 Yes, it would be great if Section Lines (and Column Grids) were 3D entities with 2D representations (instances) that could be displayed as desired in section viewports, especially for building elevations, and for building sections, too.

Also, it would be nice if portions of any single section line instance could be disassociated from the actual cut plane and adjusted for the specific viewport: the literal cut plane that works for one floor plan drawing can wreak havoc on another floor...

 Right, I noticed. But how many buildings use those sorts of (curvilinear) shapes in the way you have used them? Unless you're lucky enough to be designing cathedrals, airports, trade centers, etc... And to work for very open-minded people with enough $$$ to pull it off...

 If you're on a mac, you can use esc as an short key (select the Selection Tool in the Workspace Editor and hit the esc-button).
If you're on windows, you can do this too by changing the workspace file in a text editor (be very aware of what you're doing, make backups before messing with files).
I'm having the esc short key for the selection tool for years now and I love it!

 It would be great if base trims could be someway associated with a wall. We commonly do flush bases. This is quite hard to model as you have to create a wall recess, then apply the base. I think it could be part of the wall style as a component or better yet, an additional option that is separate from the wall type. A you could have a few predefined options - and the ability to choose a custom profile.
My first reaction is 'oh no' not another half baked tool that gets us part of the way,
My second reaction is:

....the technology and tools are already in place! = Extrude along path!
Just enhance this tool to cope with these type of demands! It should be a natural development (one would think) to make a simple adjustment where the 'extrude along path tool' automatically uses the roof edge as an (editable) path and have a library of gutter profiles to choose from!
Which doesn't reflect well on what you think of NV's ability to design user interfaces. I'd like to see a specialised tool because it's more intuitive but I share your reservations that it would end up being half-baked.

 Good idea! Perhaps we could have a more intuitive way of snapping to wall components while we're at it. It's easy when a wall is being laid out to have, say the stud align with a grid line but when a wall is shifted It can be a real bear to snap the inside face of stud to a tertiary Grid or other object.
